Cinema, Culture and a Different Way to Experience Sicily
Some journeys begin with a destination. Others begin with a story.
The Baarìa Film Festival belongs to the second kind. It’s not just a film festival — it’s a cultural experience that connects cinema, places, and identity.
Held in Bagheria, just a short drive from Palermo, the festival offers something increasingly rare: a chance to experience Sicily beyond the usual routes, through stories that reflect life on islands around the world.
What is the Baarìa Film Festival?
At its core, the Baarìa Film Festival is dedicated to island cinema — films that explore what it means to live in places shaped by the sea, distance, and strong cultural identities.
This focus makes the festival unique. Rather than simply showcasing films, it creates a dialogue between different islands, cultures, and perspectives.
And Bagheria is not just a backdrop.
With its historic villas, artistic heritage, and deep connection to cinema — famously portrayed in films like Baarìa — the town becomes an integral part of the experience. Walking through its streets during the festival feels like stepping into a living set, where reality and storytelling blend naturally.
A Look Back at the First Edition
The first edition, held in July 2025, set a strong foundation for what is quickly becoming one of Sicily’s most interesting cultural events. With more than 1,000 film submissions from across the globe, the festival immediately demonstrated its international reach.
Renowned figures such as: Giuseppe Tornatore, Danis Tanović, and Luigi Lo Cascio, helped bring visibility and credibility to the project.
Screenings were hosted in evocative locations like Villa Cattolica, as well as in open-air settings across the city. Evenings became moments of shared experience, where cinema met conversation, and visitors mixed with locals.
It wasn’t just an event — it was a cultural atmosphere.
Baarìa Film Festival 2026
The second edition will take place from June 22 to June 27, 2026, marking an important step in the festival’s growth. This year carries additional meaning, as it coincides with the bicentenary of Bagheria — a milestone that adds depth and historical resonance to the event.
What can you expect?
- A broader and more international film selection
- New voices and emerging filmmakers
- A richer program of talks, screenings, and cultural encounters
- Events spread across the city, including outdoor venues
Under the artistic direction of Vanessa Tonnini, the festival continues to evolve, combining tradition with innovation and opening itself to new forms of storytelling.
To introduce the 2026 edition, videomaker Giuseppe Sorce created a powerful visual narrative. This video blends archival images with AI-enhanced animation, transforming historical photographs into living scenes.
